@glyph its definitely tough and there is a line to be drawn between zero agency and forking your code like a fractal. but insofar as there already has to be an onramp period where you maintain both before you go live with the new one (in our world thats them testing internally and then on mastodon.online) , that, to me, is valuable time to give users the option to try something new and maximize their agency before you decide that developer ease should override their agency.
@glyph and because "we have to spend double the engineer hours maintaining two things" is easy for an entity to understand and act on and "users dont have agency in choosing how the code they run on their computer works" is this fuzzy externality , i think we probably tend to act in favor of the former more often than we should. that probably can't mean maintaining parallel designs in perpetuity after a redesign is considered necessary, but maybe it means that users get, idk, months rather than days to "onboard" themselves.
Business Visitor is the class of visa aside that most Redditors and social commentators from America have experienced. Similar low bar for strong passports. But the activities you can do are very limited and structured. Most prohibit any actual productive work. You can go to meetings and take calls. Sometimes train. You can usually take casual emails or calls for your job at home.
@hacks4pancakes Yes! And the first time this affected us Swedes was during the first Trump admin. Suddenly there was a flurry of internal directions sent out to ONLY say you were going to have meetings when we travelled to our US offices for work. I was managing a department and worked out of a US office one week every month. Colleagues who had admitted to doing that were turned away at US immigration.
I use opensource frontend services a lot, and every time I see that anime mascot I cringe and hope that it isn’t saved anywhere on my pc, its like a pdf infestation, a dog whistle. I will never recommend that software to anyone even it proves to be efficient.
Down vote me as much as you like, but I can’t think of anything else other than pdfs, when grown men like and spread moe imagery.
The classic approach to this is running a business that offers hosted versions of the self-hosted technology for a price, and offers documentation for self-hosting the stack on the same page. Users click the button for what they want.
And the business offers support contracts for a price. A business can buy these so if they run into an issue they can contact you directly to help resolve the issue. Some of these support contracts go further to allow feature requests and you they pay you for new things for that business.
Having only ever used keepass, what was the advantage of bitwarden? That you didn’t need to sync it yourself?
That you didn’t need to sync it yourself?
and that you have to never deal with sync conflicts. It’s a huge deal for those who are using tech but not understanding it, and a convenience for the rest

Email for self hosted services? (Not personal email)
Several of my self hosted services need to be able to send minor occasional emails for things like changing passwords or other notifications.
I’ve never been interested in the hassle of self-hosting my personal email, since I’ve heard about it being difficult. But for my little local services to have one admin@ or noreply@ to send from, with just a small handful of friends and family as users, maybe it’s simpler than a full personal email replacement would be? I’m not too concerned, for example, if they have to check their spam folders. As long as the email still lands. And probably wouldn’t need to worry about incoming emails.
What are you using for this type of thing? Hoping to have something not too complicated, and FOSS.
Edit: I also would like it to come from ____@mydomain.com

That’s very neat! It doesn’t really work for my Ente use-case, but definitely good to know!
It wasn’t rsync that started breaking because of some Claude changes, right?

Recommendations for music-setup?
Hey guys, so I have been searching for the different ways to self-host a music-server and don’t really know whats the best/most elegant way to go.
I know that there is navidrome and many also use jellyfin for it. Now I have a few questions:
Thanks a lot for any tips/recommendations and your help :D
